IN Y M A RY EB D O W W WINE EY RICH PICKINGS MARY DOWEY on trends, tips and three top wines to try at home E arly last year I wrote about the JURA in north-east France which has moved from obscurity to diva dazzle in less than a decade. Is it about to be overshadowed by another region close to the Alps? SAVOIE, whose wines until recently Id only sampled on ski trips, is emerging as the new darling of enthusiasts who crave unusual grapes and styles. Whites outshine reds: fresh and racy, their pristine quality rivals Alpine air for purity while grapes like Jacquère and Altesse guarantee distinctive f lavours. Look out especially for the organic whites of DOMAINE DES ARDOISIÈRES imported by Charles Dérain of Nomad Wines. Global warming has helped to ripen the grapes in Savoie even if it hasnt helped skiing conditions, he says. Youll find excellent Ardoisières bottlings at www.mitchellandson.com; www.64wine.ie; www.elywinebar.ie and www.siyps. com as well as Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud. Ù Ù Ù Although the restaurant at WHELEHANS WINES, Loughlinstown, is closed until March 2021, a Friday food market in the car park (10am-3pm) is providing customers with appetising consolation. Artisan cheeses, organic fruit and veg, Dexter beef, fresh fish and more can be picked up alongside exceptionally appealing wines. Were lucky to have a huge amount of repeat business, says David Whelehan. Once people cross the threshold they usually come back. One reason, Id guess, is his unerring palate. The other is that 80 per cent of his wines are shipped directly, keeping retail prices keen. Besides the red Burgundy recommended below, my current frontrunners include CHÂTEAU DE FESLES CHENIN SEC ANJOU 2017 (19), a perfect winter white, and the richly rewarding CHAMPAGNE L BÉNARD-PITOIS BRUT NV (35). www.whelehanswines.ie. Many vineyards were planted 20-30 years ago when fashions were different so Cabernet Sauvignon is the No 1 red grape and Chardonnay the leading The Friday food market at Whelehans Wines, Louglinstown, Co Dublin. Conor Duggan, Neil OReilly and Conor Mulligan are the creators of www.boxofwine.ie. white. Fastest rising favourite is TEMPRANILLO, no doubt because Spain is now among the worlds most dynamic wine countries. And likely to become ever more intriguing. A recent high-level Castilla y León tasting earmarked the potential of six ancient grape varieties: Puesto en Cruz, Gajo Arroba, Negro Sauri, Cenicienta, Estaladiña and Tinto Jeromo. Obscure or what? Hope I dont have to wait 30 years to taste them. Ù Ù Ù When Covid-19 struck, Rosslare hotelier and ardent wine lover Bill Kelly was quick to offer for sale online an array of worthwhile wines that had been ordered in for weddings. The response was so overwhelming that KELLYS WINE SALES are continuing. The main focus is on first-rate producers in leading French regions combed by Bill with help from brotherin-law VINCENT AVRIL , a star Châteauneufdu-Pape producer. My best buys so far have been from Domaine Ramonet in Burgundy and Yves Cuilleron in the Northern Rhône mere drops in a tantalising ocean. www.kellys.ie. Ù Ù Ù Most intriguing recent white revelation, via TERROIRS of Donnybrook, is a biodynamic wine based on 2019 juice that would normally have ended up in a top-drawer cava. It comes from CELLER CREDO, Savoie sister winery of classy vineyards cava house Recaredo (see recommendations). It may signal the beginning of a trend as sparkling wine producers everywhere (but especially in Champagne) face a pandemic-induced slump in sales. While some may consider making less expensive still wines, there is talk of grapes from this years harvest having been left to rot or distilled into alcohol for hand sanitiser. Smaller champagne houses are particularly affected by the crisis. (Big brands have deeper pockets.) Surely we can help them? Christmas isnt far away ... Take a quick online quiz and for 49 a month (plus 4.95 p&p) youll receive three bottles picked to match your preferences. Later youll be emailed for feedback so that the next box suits you even better.
