WHERE THE ART IS ...
By Blaise Smith RHA, artist
My home is full of art, or more accurately things that
are ready to be transformed into art. When I wander
into the kitchen from the studio, objects are often left
deliberately arranged on the kitchen table to attract my
eye. These little traps are laid by my wife Orla [Kelly],
an interiors and colour consultant. She deliberately
makes little arrangements of fruit and vegetables that
are co-ordinated, scheming both in colour and in
motivation. Sometimes I take the bait, sometimes I
dont. But it is always food for thought.
Even the tabletop is periodically repainted in an
interesting colour to set off a whole new range of
combinations. Of course, the downside is that I take
over the kitchen for a few days to paint the picture.
My still life paintings are generally looking down at
the objects, much more like you would actually see
them, as you stand over them. This has the happy
effect of making the ellipses more open so that pots
and plates are more abstract circular shapes, more
like a William Scott. And
it gives a reassuring sense
of space around them,
solving the dilemma of
showing the table top from
the side, which can be a
bit awkward.
These still life paintings
are popular and allow us
to occasionally indulge in
buying an amazing teapot,

or set of cups, like the
ones we bought in the Gift
Horse in Kilkenny, excusing the purchase on the basis
that we will definitely make the money back on it. So
we have a fairly eclectic set of cups in the cupboard.
It makes for a nice colourful tea party. The Still Life
Paintings of Blaise Smith is the current exhibition
in the Butler Gallery, Kilkenny until November 14;

WHAT THEY ARE ...
WHERE THE DARK IS ...
By Andrea Mara, author
Home is where the dark is ... not literally, but its where
my mind runs riot, especially lying in bed at night,
planning the best hiding places in our house, should we
come under attack. This isnt as macabre as it sounds
its a defence mechanism of sorts, and an inspiration
for plot ideas.
My home is a normal, suburban house in a quiet,
mature neighbourhood exactly the kind of place most
of my books are set. Because if everything seems calm
and sedate on the surface, thats when you can let your
imagination run riot; conjuring up what might be
going on behind closed doors.
The house was built in the 1960s and has its quirks
upside-down light-switches and haphazard shelving
and a mysterious lean-to that someone added at some
point. When Im feeling fancy, I call it a mid-century
house and dream of doing it up accordingly, but in
reality, and with very little budget left after moving
in, we bought most of what we needed from Ikea.
And perfectly fine it is too. In our old house, I wrote
three books at the kitchen table and used to clear my
notebooks into a box when it was time to collect the
kids. Now, I have a home office and a desk, and two
years on, the desk (from Ikea) is still a novelty. In my
desk drawers, I have dozens of notebooks
filled with detailed notes on All Her Fault,
because I plot each chapter by hand before
I type it up. Beside my desk is a huge floorto-ceiling window which is perfect for
watching the world go by, for imagining
what might be going on behind the scenes,
and of course, for staring into space when
I should be writing.
My husband, Harry, and I moved into
Broadspear just over three years ago. It
is a charming property with its own 60
acres in a forgotten part of Highclere Park,
the landscape of which was designed by
Capability Brown. Close to the house lies
a walled garden dating from the 1700s,
originally built as a menagerie. When
we moved in the garden had been sadly
neglected for over 200 years.
Our plans for Broadspear to implement
the full circle of sustainability began in
summer 2019 with the walled garden. We
created ten raised beds to grow a wide
variety of vegetables, herbs, salads, soft
fruit and fruit trees. It is now in full swing
and feeding us all year around. We also
planted a fruit tree orchard, a half-acre
cutting garden and a wild flower meadow.
That same summer we got two beehives
and added another three hives at the start
of this year, so we now have five working
beehives. We harvested the first honey of
the year last month and are thrilled we
got a whopping 210 jars. Honeybees, of
course, are some of the most beneficial
creatures in our environment. Theyre
natural pollinators, helping our local flora
reproduce and flourish.
As for our hens ... our beautiful girls!
We now have 14: a mix of Burford Browns,
Old Cotswold Legbars, Olives and Dekalb
Whites. They bring so much joy and life to
Broadspear, as well as the most delicious
fresh eggs. They have such an important
role to play in our sustainable cycle; even
their poo is brilliant for our compost.
There is absolutely no waste.
We have three types of compost general,
leaf and wormeries. The composting is the
most important part as it feeds the soil that
grows the plants and flowers, that feeds
the bees.
Fingers crossed this time next year we
will have free-ranging woodland pigs!
Full circle, thats what makes it all so
exciting and interesting, how to better that
circle all the time. In Minutes by Clodagh
McKenna, published by Kyle Books, £20,
is out now.
