C
hoosing hotels for their vibe, especially happy hotels is one of 2024s
key travel trends. Many new properties are defined by their joyful,
mood-boosting design schemes. Beata Heumans Hôtel de la Boétie,
Paris, is a case in point. Beatas rose pink Frette bedsheets, silver
wallpaper and checkerboard tiles have been a success with guests.
Design can often be something very serious, but people want to have fun and feel
free when theyre travelling, explains Adrien Gloaguen, founder of the Touriste
group, of which La Boétie is part. If popping over to Paris, do check out Galerie
Dior, 30 avenue Montaigne, where an exhibition of archive fashion also celebrates
the brands close links with women artists. www.hoteldelaboetie.com.
Other new buzzwords include destination dupes more
affordable alternatives to popular spots. Think Paros for Santorini,
Procida for Capri and Bodrum for St Tropez. Look out for
opening rates at the boutique hotel Maxx Royal Bodrum, which
will bring the Mykonos Scorpios Beach Club scene to the allinclusive resort. www.maxxroyal.com. Big name entertainment is
also driving travel (and economics) like never before, with many
tour trippers using a concert as the excuse to visit a new place.
Hôtel de La Boétie, Paris
THE GLOSS art director Patricia Marinho is planning trips
to see her favourite band, Keane, playing in Manchester and
London. Most recently, she saw Madonna in Antwerp. If visiting this elegant city, by
the way, the Hotel Flora is decidedly happy, with interiors by Gert Voorjans which
mix botanical motifs, Chinese pagodas and abstract artwork. www.hotelflora.be.
Set jetting also shows no signs of diminishing. Especially popular are Bath and
Windsor, inspired by the new seasons of Bridgerton and The Crown respectively.
Beauty editor Sarah Halliwell says she could quite happily move to Bath because
of Topping Company Booksellers, housed in a former chapel and a great resource
for finding signed first editions. Sarah stays at The Yard Hotel, €109 per room;
www.theyardinbath.co.uk. She also recommends booking a spa session at Thermae,
from £41stg. The warm rooftop pool overlooking the city is alone worth the entry
fee. www.thermaebathspa.com.
More people are investing in transformational trips. One to book is Greystonesbased Georgina Durcans reset retreat in the Algarve from February 23-25. Coaching,
yoga, meditation, hiking, and access to a hammam all combine for a restorative
experience. Prices start from €399 and include transfers, accommodation and meals.

houses for guests on a self-catering basis the Karst House (sleeps eight) and the
Currach House (sleeps four). Both are in the centre of island with optional delivery
of an Island Dinner. www.inismeain.com. The Irish Landmark Trust: Celebrating 30
years of saving and sharing buildings with the public, a stay in one of the Landmark
Trust,s 40 quirky properties, from gate lodges to lighthouses, castles to cottages,
is an opportunity to feel good and do good. A bonus: many are pet friendly too!
www.irishlandmark.com. Fairmont Carton House, Co Kildare. Look out for three
wellness retreats led by the hotels wellness ambassador, Sinead Moon, known
for her playful approach to wellbeing. The retreats will include spa treatments,
yoga, forest bathing and sound baths. www.fairmont.com. Within the Village,
Roundstone, Connemara, comprises three renovated village houses converted into
five self-catering suites, which can host from two to 28 guests. The concept will
appeal to the traveller seeking immersive, pared back, design-led luxury, explains
owner Keith Kissane. Each suite has a kitchen, comfy sitting room with stove,
a communal reception and garden space. www.withinthevillage.ie.
CHECKING IN: SLIEVE DONARD HOTEL & SPA, CO DOWN
THE VIBE: Victorian grande dame, celebrating 125 years in business.
WHY GO? Slieve Donard has undergone a 16m renovation and
relaunch by Marine & Lawn Hotels & Resorts, known for its hotels
beside some of the worlds best golf courses St Andrews, Troon,
North Berwick and Dornoch Station. Slieve Donard is close to Royal
Co Down, and has fabulous views of the Mourne Mountains, and
a spa. DECOR: Lush foliage, art-filled

architectural elements combine with
railway-inspired elements (the hotel
was originally built by Belfast and
County Down Railway in 1898). ROOMS:
Comfortable and chintzy with sea views.
Dog beds can be provided for pet stays.
FOOD: There are four new restaurants:
the art deco-inspired JJ Farralls, where
breakfast is served, is named after the
hotels architect. The casual Lighthouse
Lounge offers Mediterranean menus;
the Wolf Bar is the place for some Carlingford oysters and original cocktails;
The Percy French is a local favourite for comfort food and bar snacks designed
to please hungry golfers. DONT: Be surprised if you hear lots of American
accents. Enjoy people watching as (often famous) golfers come and go on the
windswept course. THE VERDICT: From rather tired old lady to perky hostess, this
is an elegant update with tempting midweek and weekend offers, from £165stg.
