BOOKS ROYALLY GOOD READS As Jilly Coopers Rivals gets a long-overdue modern-day adaptation courtesy of Disney+, we are in the mood for some aristocratic reads. Charlotte Cootes interior design book The Flower Room is a beautiful guide to creating interiors inspired by nature. It covers colour, pattern, florals and botanicals, textiles and, of course, how to work with actual flowers and foliage. Coote was born into the family business her father was the Australian designer John Coote (late of Bellamont Forest in Cavan) who was known for his high-profile international design projects. India Hicks writes the foreword for The Flower Room (incidentally her father David and Charlottes father were great friends) and she has her own fascinating book out at the moment, a biography of her mother, Lady Pamela. Lady Pamela Mountbatten, to give her her full name, is a member of the British Royal family. Hicks explores her mothers life of privilege and all the challenges that came with it. What elevates this biography is Hicks personal perspective on her mothers character and their relationship. Crown Princess of Greece, Marie Chantal, has put her extensive knowledge into a book, Manners Begin At Breakfast. Etiquette guides may seem archaic but good manners are never out of style! Marie Chantal emphasises the importance of good manners in making a positive first impression, as well as in building relationships and respect. She even offers relatable advice on the contemporary minefield that is social media. Finally, Craig Browns book A Voyage Around The Queen takes a look at one of the best-known figures of the 20th century, the late Queen Elizabeth II, in this entertaining collection of essays. WHATS ON MY BEDSIDE TABLE Vicki Notaro Vicki Notaro is an Irish journalist, columnist and former magazine editor. Her first novel Reality Check (Penguin Sandycove, 15.99) was inspired by her love of reality television, social media and celebrity culture. Notaro lives in Dublin with her husband and their terrier, Jacko. She is working on her second book. At the moment Im reading The Husbands by Holly Gramazio which I went into with little prior knowledge, and Im so glad I did. Im not normally one for fantasy or science fiction but this book is grounded in reality. Lauren comes home from a hen party to find a man in her house she doesnt recognise, who claims to be her husband. Shes never met him, but her phone, printed photos of their wedding and the people she loves say otherwise. Soon she realises that when a husband goes into her attic, some unidentified magic happens and a new man emerges. They vary in quality some are sexier than others, some she clicks better with but faced with this abundance of husbands, how is Lauren meant to choose just one? The book is funny, whimsical and astute, and yet it deals with deep themes about relationships, choosing a mate and feeling left behind in life. I like to temper my fiction consumption with a celebrity memoir, and my most recent recommendation is My Name Is Barbra by the inimitable Ms Streisand. Its a huge book the audio version is 48 hours long and read by the woman herself but if youre a fan of Barbra Streisand or even just vintage showbiz gossip, this book is for you. She goes off on tangents about vintage clothing and men, but one thing is very clear throughout she prefers to be thought of as an actor/director, and not a singer. Im going to listen to the audiobook when the nights draw in, because Streisand sings, ad libs and even, at one point, attempts an Irish accent. WRITERS BLOCK CECELIA AHERN Cecelia Ahern is an Irish novelist whose debut novel, PS I Love You was published in 2004, when she was just 23. Her books are now published in over 40 countries and have sold over 25 million copies worldwide. Her latest novel, Into The Storm, was published last month by Harper Collins. Im such a homebody. I love Ireland. Whenever anyone asks me where my favourite place in the world is, its somewhere that has reminded me of home. The weather here suits me. I love a bit of rain. I love fresh air. This is where Im meant to be. I live in Malahide in Dublin, where I was born and bred. Its a lovely village. When I travel and tell people that I live in the same place I was born, they think its very unusual. They cant believe I live in the same village as my mother and sister and that my kids go to the same school that I went to. ON FAMILY There are two and a half years between me and my older sister Georgina but I never really felt like there was a big difference. Shed always call me her big little sis because she hated doing English essays and shed slide hers under my door and Id help her out. Shed say, thank you, big little sis. She was better at conversation and being more grown-up and Id do cartwheels and entertain, but we helped each other out, as if we were the same age. I think thats a sister thing. ON ROOTS My dads parents are both from Cork. Whenever Cork are playing GAA I support Cork, but we never went there on holidays. Kerry was our place, thats like my second home and I feel like my roots are there. But family blood is Cork stubborn, strong, Cork! My mum grew up on Joness Road beside Croke Park; both my parents grew up in Drumcondra. Im all of those places really. I am a mix of everybody. My mum is a Kelly and I think a large part of me is Kelly. The Kellys are eccentric. My daughter told me that I love talking to strangers and my grandma used to do that too. ON WRITING I write in the attic of my home with lovely light coming in. Its all white white desk, walls, shelves, I hate anything to catch my eye. The only colour is from my books and art. The sculptor Orla de Brí is a friend and I love her pieces. I have one that I got instead of an engagement ring. That was what I wanted. From here I can see the sky and the tops of the trees. When Im writing I always light a Jo Malone Lime, Basil and Mandarin candle. I met Jo Malone on a TV show, and she told me that every time I light the candle Im triggering my brain, telling it I want it to create, and it immediately opens itself up. Its nice to have an atmosphere in the room, to make things gentler, so you can just fall into your story. ON SUCCESS Success is that moment when Ive done the school run and I come home to a quiet house, put the kettle on, and know there are hours ahead of me to do something I love doing, that Im going to disappear into this world, and its my job. When we were on the set of PS I Love You we went to Whelans and my mum came with me and that Galway Girl song was playing on a loop and there were loads of extras, a huge crew, excitement on the street, and Hilary Swank was in town, and my mum just looked at me and said, Look what you started. I love the way she said that because I didnt feel that it was my movie, but I did feel then that I had started it. ON BOOKSHOPS I love getting lost in a bookshop, particularly Malahide Bookshop. Many of my favourite books have ended up being ones that Ive discovered in a bookshop, taking my time to look through the shelves. Into The Storm (Harper Collins, €15.99) is out now. @edelcoffey ON HOME THE GLOSS MAGAZINE November 2024 57 COMFORT FOOD & COSY PUBS / WEARING IRISH / SIPPING REDS / NEW SHOPS ON THE BLOCK / SOLO TRAVEL / BOOKS OF THE MONTH MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2024 with THE IRISH TIMES ww w. t ss.ie o l g he Rock steady in an unstable world Fashion at work + BE MORE INTERESTING Designers & their desks CONTENTS IN THIS ISSUE THE GLOSS MONTHLY REMINDER SIGN UP to receive a monthly reminder by email when THE GLOSS is out so that you never miss an issue.
