STYLE CV PAUL DONOVAN T 1 he utility-inspired jacket train is still in motion, and for good reason. Living in Ireland, with its will-it-wont-it-be warm enough temperatures, the style solution for summer is simple: an unlined cotton twill, canvas or linen jacket. Its the ideal partner for nearly everything you own, from chinos and button-ups to jeans, shirts and T-shirts. We recently spotted great vintage French versions on actors Jeremy Allen White, Jacob Elordi and Austin Butler the gold-standard wearers of effortless cool sourced from Golden Age Hollywood, a vintage workwear store in LA. Originally dubbed bleu de travail, or workers blues, for that irrefutably French shade of indigo, chore jackets have evolved far beyond navy: now available in a multitude of colourways, from Percivals racinggreen take to Le Mont Saint Michels tobacco versions. Amo & Pax in Kilmacanogue, Co Wicklow offers a particularly good interpretation: a five-pocket Irish linen chore jacket with cuff buttons and enough structure to sit somewhere between a blazer and a shacket. Elsewhere, Arket has leaned into unlined, slightly stiffer, canvas blazer style jackets, €129, that hit the sweet spot between polished and practical, while Magee 1866 delivers a softer approach with the textured Moy tumbled linen unlined jacket, €475. Stable of Ireland also offers very cool box-style denim and linen versions, €380, while Hark (see right) stocks French label Vetras durable herringbone canvas cotton jacket, €215. Look for a fit that works for your body type: there should be room for a lightweight sweater, but not so much that it looks oversized. These jackets improve with age and may even need a few wears to break in. A corduroy collar can 2 add interest, and lots of pockets are always a plus. My go-to outfit is a French workwear jacket (we stock Vetra), with dark trousers and, for as long as I can remember, a pair of New Balance 997s. BEST INVESTMENT PIECES? I always invest in decent glasses. Right now I am wearing Entourage of 7 glasses. I also have a Marmot Guides down jacket that gets a huge amount of use. WHERE DO YOU SHOP? Online for sneakers. As a shop owner, I think theres a misconception around online shopping. Its an important channel for stores shoppers just need to prioritise Irish retailers over buying directly from brand websites. For T-shirts, I love dropping into Tribe in St Stephens Green Shopping Centre. If I find an item I really like, I tend to stick with the design and pick it up in different colours when needed. Im also making an effort to replace US brands with Irish designs and stores where possible and if not, then European ones. My mantra is: Its only expensive if you dont wear it. SHOPPING WISH LIST? If I ever get a fancy watch it will be the two-tone Canfield Speedway Lap 06 by Shinola. FAVOURITE ACCESSORIES? Practical stuff excites me. I picked up a Casio Pro Trek watch in Hong Kong in 2017: I use the stopwatch on it constantly, it has several alarms to let me know when to open and close the store. I am not precious about it: its a working tool, scratches add character. SIGNATURE SCENT? Dior Homme. A cedar and patchouli, masculine scent. It lasts all day. TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOB? I run Hark, a practical goods store. Its a dream job really. I get to source pieces I think are useful and then I get to enjoy peoples reactions when they come back in and tell me how much they use each item. The people I have the opportunity to chat to makes it all a pleasure. FAVOURITE APPS? Youtube for long-form content like American psychologist Carl Rogers, Vox news reports and The Rest Is Politics podcast theyre my gotos at the moment. WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO? My favourite podcast is 99% Invisible. I watch Roman Mars Ted Talk on Flag Design every few months. TO-DO LIST? I put together my own version of Jesse Itzlers Big A## Calendar and made a conscious effort to plan ahead. Ive finished the first of my habit changes to read more.
