Youre lying on your couch binging re-runs of Arrested Development and avoiding reality, when your phone buzzes. You pick it up, and the notification says you have been added to the WhatsApp group Ireland Holibops 2026. You and 12 others, you realise, bringing the grand total to nearly 40 when you include their spouses and offspring, plus various pets. We should get something in the diary for summer, Yes, I need a holiday!, and various other enthusiastic but non-committal messages follow, then silence for a few months, before a flurry of panic sets in and someone takes the lead on getting the thing booked. And youre off again for another few days down the country with your mates and their entourages. The annual group staycation. Here are my hard-learned lessons on how to make it a fun one. First, be honest with yourself I should declare my position here. I dont have children (part anatomical failing, part choice). I love children however, and my friends and family have plenty of them, so I am happily included in such group trips. Provided they never use the word holibops. This kind of holiday is not for everybody, and there is no shame in that. If youarepreciousaboutyourthings,your space, or a long hot shower, you will have a miserable time and everyone will know it. Additionally, if you dont hang around with these people generally, dont go on holidays together. A week in a house will not repair a friendship or strengthen a family dynamic thats already ropey. Drop in for a day trip if you really need to show face. Twelve adults trying to align on dates in August is like herding cats, and the cats all have different summer camps. Somebody needs to take charge, do the research, and make executive decisions. Photo: iStock WhatsApp polls are useful, but only for narrowing things down. Put up two or three properties you have checked are available, give people 48 hours to vote, and book the winner. Where will we go? will just get you 90 messages and no holiday. Sort the money at the outset. Set up a Revolut group and get everybody to pay their share in advance, before the booking is made. Dont set yourself up for resentment. Do the sums and dont deviate Most people book on bedroom count alone, which is insufficient. Bathrooms needtoentertheequation.Workoutthe sleeping arrangements before you commit - who is sharing with whom, which family needs a cot, and where to put the snorers in the group. Do not solve a shortfall by putting beds into the living space. Listings love boasting sleeps up to 12 but the fine print says four of those are on a pullout couch in the sitting room. Grand for a night, hell for a week. You need that space for the midnight chats. Which brings me to the best advice I have: two smaller houses beat one crammed house every time. Two cottages on the same site, or a cluster of cabins, gives everybody a door to hide their mess behind, and often costs around the same. The house is the holiday With a group this size you are not booking a location for the nearby attractions. You are booking a holiday home, and you will spend most of your time in it. What you want is one enormous kitchentable,alivingareathatseatsall the adults, and some outdoor space to let the kids and pets go bananas. We had a brilliant weekend at Ross Castle in Connemara, which one of the group found and booked directly. It sleeps up to 40, comfortably in my experience - we were close to that number. Theres a huge kitchen, a massive garden, and a fantastic indoor heated pool that occupied the children for hours. Critically, it had a great washing machine which I learned is a godsend with messy children. It was not without incident.
